Literary Magazine Publication Nuts and Bolts: Poetry and Prose--FULL

How can we develop submission systems we can sustain over a period of years that will nurture, not damage, our writing practices? This class offers an approach that works for poetry and prose and will examine publishing in literary journals and magazines as well as alternative forms of publication you may not have considered.
It will also include tips for getting work ready to submit, including revision and how to know a piece is “finished,” writing cover and pitch letters, figuring out where to send work, electronic and snail mail submissions, contests, and developing a submission routine that is effective without impinging on creative time and space.
Book publication will be briefly discussed, but the focus will be on publication of poems, stories, and essays.
Rebecca Foust’s books of poetry include Paradise Drive, winner of the 2015 Press 53 Award for Poetry and reviewed in venues including the Times Literary Supplement, San Francisco Chronicle, Huffington Post, and Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Georgia, Harvard, and Hudson reviews. Recent recognitions include the Cavafy Prize, the James Hearst Poetry Prize, the Lascaux Prize for Flash Fiction, the American Literary Review Fiction Prize, the Constance Rooke Creative Nonfiction Prize, and fellowships from MacDowell, Sewanee, The Frost Place, and West Chester Poetry Conference.
Foust is the mother of an adult son on the spectrum and received a CA Golden Bell award in 2008 for her work in autism advocacy. She is the 2017-19 Poet Laureate of Marin County and is the Poetry Editor for Women’s Voices for Change, writing a weekly column since 2015.
