Where are you located? How do I get there?
1543 Shattuck in North Berkeley. Our office is next to Jotmahal Indian restaurant. Go up the twelve stairs from the street and you can't miss us. If you have a mobility issue, continue reading below.
Parking: Two hour off-street and three-hour metered parking is available on the blocks around our office. The metered parking is available for free during the evenings, when most of our classes meet.
Public transportation: Many AC Transit bus lines stop within feet of our office. The closest BART station is Downtown Berkeley, about a 10 minute walk.
What should I do if I have a mobility issue?
There is a side alley on Cedar St., to the left of Gregoire's, that will bring you to the back door of Jotmahal restaurant. Wheelchair access goes through the restaurant and outside to our front door. Please contact David at firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss the safest route to Left Margin LIT.
In which of your classes should I enroll?
Our classes are designed for all skill levels, from beginners approaching the craft for the first time to more experienced writers revising manuscripts for publication. As we grow, we will also offer some workshops tailored to beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels.
How many students are in a class?
5-12 students in workshops. We want to guarantee that your work gets the attention it deserves. For lecture-style classes, we may admit up to 16, depending on the instructor's teaching method and goals for the class.
How does the application process work? Why can't I just enroll directly?
For short term classes, you can directly enroll: admission is first come, first served. Our longer workshops require a brief application to ensure the integrity of the group. You can find the application at the class page, or here. Our program director reads every application carefully and consults with Left Margin’s instructors to find the best fit for each applicant and his/her work. If you are accepted into a class, the director will notify you with instructions for enrollment and payment.
How do I pay for my course?
We prefer payment via Paypal on our website, though personal checks are also accepted. (Email us if you want to pay by check.)
What is your refund policy?
We can't offer refunds once a class has begun. We operate on a small budget, and course fees pay our instructors. If you find that you can't take a workshop for which you registered, you may request a refund, less a $50 administrative fee, at least 48 hours prior to the start of the first class session. For one-day classes the fee is $25. If a class doesn't reach its minimum enrollment, it will be cancelled, and all students will receive a full refund.
What will happen after I apply for one of your classes?
Within a couple of days, you’ll receive an email from us with an admissions decision. If you're in, congratulations! Now, to hold your place, you will need to confirm enrollment and pay the class fee. A few days prior to the beginning of the course, you will receive an email from your instructor welcoming you to the class and providing instructions and materials.
