This is a graduate (MFA) style workshop for writers who want a rigorous, immersive experience writing poetry. Perhaps you’re a writer who has always been curious about graduate level classes. Or maybe you’re considering applying for an MFA program and would like to continue honing your craft and developing your manuscript for consideration. Ideally this class will be populated with experienced writers who have made (or plan to make) a serious effort at writing and publishing poetry.
Most of our class time will be spent discussing your poems, though we will read some work by established writers to develop our understanding of the craft elements that lead to writing good poems. And of course we’ll be reading and commenting on each other’s work. Our objective is to offer you new strategies that will create more magic in your poems. Enrollment is limited to 8 people.
David Roderick’s first book of poems, Blue Colonial, won the APR/Honickman Prize and was published by Copper Canyon Press in 2006. The Pitt Poetry Series published his second collection, The Americans, in 2014.
David’s writing has been awarded an NEA Creative Writing Fellowship, a Wallace Stegner Fellowship at Stanford University, the Amy Lowell Traveling Scholarship, the James Boatwright III Prize from Shenandoah, the Julie Suk Award, and the Campbell Corner Poetry Prize. He has taught creative writing and literature classes at Stanford, the University of San Francisco, San Francisco State University, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and most recently at the MFA Writing Program at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he was an Associate Professor in Creative Writing.
