About
Dates: 4 Wednesdays, October 15 - November 5 Time: 7 - 9pm (Pacific Coast Time) Format: ZOOM Ages: Adult Why are memoir and essay writers increasingly turning to fantasy, mythology, and imaginary maps to tell true stories? Traditional creative nonfiction often gets trapped in tired debates about fact versus truth. But speculative nonfiction offers a bold alternative—using daydreaming, associative leaps, and "what if" scenarios as tools for social and personal transformation, especially for writers exploring trauma, identity, and marginalized experiences. This generative workshop will immerse you in cutting-edge theory and examples from writers like Jami Nakamura Lin, J. Nicole Jones, and Lauren Slater. Through hands-on exercises, you'll experiment with adding speculative elements to existing work and generate entirely new pieces that blur the boundaries between memoir and imagination. You'll leave with concrete techniques for "perhapsing" your way into deeper truths, plus drafts of speculative work that pushes beyond conventional storytelling into transformative territory. LEFT MARGIN LIT'S CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY: If you find that you can't take a class for which you registered, you may request a refund, less a $25 administrative fee, at least 48 hours prior to the start of the first class session. After that threshold, refunds are not possible. If a class doesn't reach its minimum enrollment, it will be cancelled, and all students will receive full refunds.
