The Whole Story: From Rough Draft to Final Draft

About

Dates: 2 Saturdays, March 7-14 Time: 10am-12pm (Pacific Coast Time) Format: In Person at Left Margin LIT Ages: Adult Class Description: Writing is solitary and there really is no way around that: excerpt for this class! Together, we will draft a 1,500 word story. Beginning with an essay discussion and craft choices (pov, setting, dialog) we will then tackle a generative prompt. For homework, we will revise our story; then the following week, we will collectively workshop, discussing sentence level options and revision strategies. Why 1,500 words? I’ve found that is the perfect length for performance and for almost all journals and calls for submission. It also allows us to discuss the complete writing cycle from composing to revising, to editing. Students will leave the class with ideally a complete story, a new sense of creative energy, and a community practice. This class is perfect to reinvigorate your writing practice or for getting unstuck; perfect for memoir or fiction, a specific scene or a complete story. It's low stakes and playful and supportive and you might even leave with a submission ready piece! All writing experience levels and backgrounds are welcome. LEFT MARGIN LIT'S CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY: If you find that you can't take a class for which you registered, you may request a refund, less a $25 administrative fee, at least 48 hours prior to the start of the first class session. After that threshold, refunds are not possible. If a class doesn't reach its minimum enrollment, it will be cancelled, and all students will receive full refunds.
