Soil, Sea, and Sky: Nonfiction Nature Writing

About

Dates: 2 Saturdays, March 21-28 Time: 10am-12pm (Pacific Coast Time) Format: Zoom Ages: Adult Class Description: The objective of this class is to examine what it means to create meaningful and powerful essays about the natural world. By studying writers such as Annie Dillard, J. Drew Lanham, Robin Wall Kimmerer, Rick Bass, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, and Latria Graham, we will discover what is involved in exceptional nature writing and learn how to move beyond observations to tell stories that resonate and, as Johnathan Franzen writes, “create converts.” We will cultivate essay writing skills such as voice, plot, reflection, and braiding. We will explore how these foundational aspects of creative writing can be enhanced by developing abilities specific to nature writing such as observation, sensory detail, and place as character. Our readings, prompts, and open invitations will inspire us to draft and revise our own work based on what we’ve learned. There will also be time for sharing that work in a safe and welcoming environment. LEFT MARGIN LIT'S CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY: If you find that you can't take a class for which you registered, you may request a refund, less a $25 administrative fee, at least 48 hours prior to the start of the first class session. After that threshold, refunds are not possible. If a class doesn't reach its minimum enrollment, it will be cancelled, and all students will receive full refunds.
