About
Date: Sunday, December 7 Time: 9:30am - 12:00pm (Pacific Coast Time) Format: ZOOM Ages: Adult Whether you’re new to poetry or a long-time practitioner, come join this day of poetry as play. The cento is a type of found poem that has been composed since antiquity but didn't enjoy much popular respect until recently. But the form offers tons of fascinating possibilities for poets in letting us get out of our heads. Do you want to speak with authority? Want to try on some new emotional range? Want to pay homage to your elders? Want to engage the political sphere but don't know where to begin? The cento can be your key. This form helps us explore our subconscious, speak politically and intimately, tap into the full spectrum of emotion, and maybe even find new possibilities for our own singular voices. Whether you intend to use this form only as an exercise to loosen up your own voice, or to create a finished poem, practicing the cento will expand your sense of what all poems can do. In this generative class, we'll look at the grand opportunities of this versatile form, and then throw caution to the winds and try making our own centos in a variety of ways. Students should bring to class at least five favorite poems and a notebook. LEFT MARGIN LIT'S CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY: If you find that you can't take a class for which you registered, you may request a refund, less a $25 administrative fee, at least 48 hours prior to the start of the first class session. After that threshold, refunds are not possible. If a class doesn't reach its minimum enrollment, it will be cancelled, and all students will receive full refunds.
