Dates: 4 Thursdays, February 15 - March 7

Time: 6 - 8 pm PST
Instructor: Tommy Mouton
Ages: Adult
Genre: Memoir/Personal Essay

We understand the sheer power of our respective childhood and adolescent memories. But how can we harness this power to propel a narrative as well as capture a reader’s attention?

In this four-week extensive workshop, we will delve into the neuroscience behind memory (Lisa Genova), the basic psychology of memory (Dr. Kevin Leman), and Mary Karr’s notion of “implanted memory,” those forgotten memories shared with us by family and friends.

With childhood memories as the creative foundation, come and explore the differences between emotional truth and factual truth, image and imagination, character and voice, form and meaning. By workshop’s end, you will have a worthwhile draft or at least the grace and gumption to meet head-on that long-neglected project.

So, whether your childhood/adolescent memories are heartbreaking or ironically humorous, whether you are a seasoned writer or a novice, this workshop’s weekly writing exercises, formal and informal workshops, and readings (Tara Westover, Jesmyn Ward, Jeannette Walls, Sara Broom, Grace Talusan, Annie Dillard, Natasha Trethewey, among others) will leave you inspired and invigorated.

Come and write (and share) your memories with us—all their joys, failures, and mysteries.
