How to Sell Your Ideas to the World: Writing and Pitching Op-Eds (Virtual)

Dates: 2 Wednesdays, May 13 and 20

Time: 7 - 9 pm
Instructor: Ruth Whippman
Ages: Adult
Genre: Publishing
Price: $150

Op-eds are the perfect way to sell an idea to the world, either for its own sake or as a way to promote something else, like a book, political campaign, charitable cause, or even a business, something that is particularly relevant during quarantine when other avenues for promotion might be closed off. This class will teach you how to craft, write, pitch, and sell the perfect op-ed.

We will focus on how to structure an argument, make it relevant and newsworthy and then write a piece that will immediately grab and then hold readers’ attention. We will look at how to choose an appropriate publication that will be the best fit for your idea; the best timing for when to pitch your idea to editors ; and how to word the pitch so that it will be picked up and stand out from the hundreds of other submissions that major publications receive each day.

Each student should leave at the end of the course with a fully formed op-ed idea that they can then adapt to various emerging news stories and situations.
