The Rhythms and Patterns of Poetry

About

Dates: 2 Thursdays, October 23 - 30 Time: 6:30 - 8:30pm (Pacific Coast Time) Format: ZOOM Ages: Adult Where does rhythmic awareness show up in your writing process? Pattern sense is our inheritance, part of the somatic wisdom that both influences and emerges from works of art, although it often operates below the conscious focus we bring to writing and reading. As poets, our training in prosody, rhythm, and metrical structure faces tangled definitions easily confined to analysis and description, with minimal attention to generative and supportive capacities: as listening tools, compositional guide rails, narrative frameworks, and sources of thematic and gestural insight. In this immersive short course, we’ll examine how patterns in sound and timing contribute to rhythm, tone, and theme. We’ll also consider other types of modulation to broaden the rhythmic strengths of our writing. We’ll explore through varied poems, a few working definitions, and experiments that require little more than simple writing tools, voice included. By considering prosody and structure in process, we can grow our skills, compositional choices, and scope of possibility for our poems.
