This class, designed for all levels, will focus on workshopping your poems: the ones you’ve drafted already or want to write. Our class meetings will provide you with lots of constructive feedback and encouragement.
And yes, believe it or not, we’ll make joy one of our central pursuits. Though life often feels dreary (especially given the current political climate), and though the very act of writing can lead to doubt and frustration, we’ll celebrate whatever pleasures writing and discussing poems brings to our lives. The few assigned poems we’ll read each week will affirm William Carlos Williams’s famous declaration, “if it ain’t a pleasure, it ain’t a poem.”

David Roderick is the author of Blue Colonial, winner of the APR/Honickman Prize, and The Americans, winner of the Julie Suk Award for Poetry. David’s writing has been awarded a Wallace Stegner Fellowship at Stanford University, the Amy Lowell Traveling Scholarship, the James Boatwright III Prize from Shenandoah, and the Campbell Corner Poetry Prize. He has taught creative writing and literature classes at Stanford, the University of San Francisco, San Francisco State University, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and most recently at the MFA Writing Program at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he was an Associate Professor in Creative Writing. He curates the poetry column State Lines for the San Francisco Chronicle.
