Ode to Art: Ekphrastic Experiments

How do art forms speak to each other? What does it mean to write about a work of art like a painting, sculpture, piece of music, dance performance, or film? And how can writing about the art of others teach us about our own artistic aims?
Ek-phrasis — a poem that describes a work of art — literally means “to out tell” or “to tell (us) more.” In this class, we’ll figure out what the “more” that is art can tell us each about our own writing. We’ll explore writing, especially poetry, that responds to art in dialogue or inspiration. We’ll consider this form carefully.
Finally, together, we’ll visit an art museum and generate our own new writings, and read them closely for clues about the creative process in our lives.
