If the story of your life seems too complicated to begin, why not try being brief? Flash nonfiction, generally defined as free-standing prose of 2000 words or less, has been around for centuries, but this enduring form seems to be enjoying particular popularity today.
In this one-day class, we’ll examine a wide range of dazzling flash nonfiction pieces--from brief to even briefer--determining what gives them their power. We’ll talk about how to compress craft elements such as plot, backstory, setting and scene. You’ll also have plenty of opportunity in class to experiment with and share your own writing as well as learn about the many publication possibilities for short form writing.
Whether you’re a novice or an experienced writer, you should come away from the class inspired to continue shaping your own life in brief but powerful ways.
Monica Wesolowska is the author of the memoir Holding Silvan: A Brief Life and a forthcoming children’s picture book Leo Plus Lea. In addition, she publishes short fiction and essays in a wide variety of venues including The New York Times.
A former fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Monica has been teaching at UC Berkeley Extension, Stanford Continuing Studies, and elsewhere for over sixteen years. She also runs an independent editing business.
